Sherlock McBiskit and Friends Company has a subsidiary program called Paws for Character where we visit elementary schools to teach Character education. The program was designed to help students understand the importance of thinking and acting in ways that reflect Good Character. We show students what they gain when they adopt positive character traits and what they can lose without them. The program currently uses twelve canine friends to demonstrate to students how character traits such as Respect, Responsibility,

Honesty, Perseverance, Integrity, Caring, Courage, Resilency, Hope, Good Citizenship, Friendship, Cooperation, Gratitude, Honesty, Justice and Fairness, Patience, and Sportsmanship can have a great impact on their lives.

The program is designed to teach students how to think and act in ways that will help them gain much in life and conversely, stop thinking and acting in ways that can cause them to lose a great deal. They learn the difference between a “winning” and a “losing” belief system. It is a fun and effective way to teach character education. Since beginning this program in 2002, I and my canine friends have taught thousands of elementary school students in both public and private schools the value of Good Character. PAWS for Character enjoys visiting both conventional and autistic classrooms(click on visiting students with special needs at top of page).

The program can be adapted to any grade level and to any character trait. Any topic a school or classroom would like to highlight is reinforced in the PAWS program.

If your school or organization is interested in having us visit, just click on email me at the bottom of this page.

What they say about us-

Selwyn Elementary School - Charlotte N. C.

“Paws for Character” is an outstanding program aimed to build positive character traits for students in kindergarten to third grade. A former Selwyn parent, Mrs. Reading, created the “Paws for Character” concept and program. She visits classrooms with the dogs which exhibit special personality traits and who love interacting with the students. Each of the dogs represents one of the various character traits students should emulate. Each month, Mrs. Reading and one of the dogs visits a classroom where she talks about the character trait for that month. Mrs. Reading relates stories about the dogs and how they exhibit the positive character traits of good citizenship, caring, responsibility, or the character trait of the month in their actions. Subsequently, the students discuss ways that they can demonstrate positive character traits at home, at school, and in the community. This program has been very effective and enjoyable for students at Selwyn and has given them a different perspective to learning about character.”

“Kindergarten students, who are learning about respect in guidance class, got a visit from a cute and furry friend in early April to help them understand the importance of treating others nicely, remembering to say thank you, and taking care of the things they value. Paws for Character educator Pauli Reading brought Sherlock McBiskit, a west highland terrier, to demonstrate how good character traits can make a difference in life. She told stories about "Biskit" and how he learned to respect his toys, other neighborhood dogs, and himself. This innovative character education program bridges important lessons with children's natural interest in pets.”
